Laser Trimming Applications
Laser trimming of electronic circuits is an alternative
method of tuning or adjusting circuit parameters. Fine resistor
tolerances cannot be achieved by using thick film printing
technologies, so the resistor values are adjusted by laser; the
resistance is increased by cutting into the resistive paste. Surface
mount resistors and capacitors can be adjusted in a similar way. In some
circuits the performance of the device cannot be determined just by
design, collective tolerances means that some adjustment has to be made
to the circuit to get it to perform correctly; a good example of this is
the zero offset of an amplifier or sensor. This can be adjusted by using
select-on-test resistors, potentiometers or laser trimming. The latter
is the most precise, fastest and most economical method unless dealing
with very low volumes.
